As for your conspiracy theory, you need to contemplate the "3 ways of getting things done", google it. Autonomy is often just as frequent as hierarchy, with heterarchy rarely existing outside bureaucracies or those with close emotional bonds. When you come across a curiosity in society and culture more than often there is no covert hierarchy at the top pulling the strings and the entire thing just formed naturally.
