In order to be influential due to your ideas you must first have ideas, the bolsheviks chose Marxism exactly because it makes no original inferences, they didn't want ideas, they wanted propoganda, marxist-leninism was just the propoganda face of Russian imperialism and it is entirely feasible for them to have chosen someone else as the poster boy for their state religion.
