Its not really true, I went to a Meps office recently and met many recruits who just recently enlisted. Most of them came from middle American families and many i saw were people in their early 30's. But yeah, when I was there you had your basic jarheads, finger-on-the-trigger, pro-war enthusiast wearing some custom made platoon shirt of people who had served (friends or family) before them, but most of them were just normal people.
