Liberal egalitarians want quotas so that every industry's workforce reflects the make-up of the population. They believe this is how things would be if not for "discrimination." All this is based on the flawed assumption that people of different gender, race and ethnic group have no differing predetermined mental abilities or dispositions. The imagined "discrimination" they seek to abolish is mainly a result of these aforementioned differences.

I personally, don't agree with Affirmative Action as I've only been promoted in my occupation based on my performance. (I'm black and I work with a bunch of stupid fucks from "The Valley")
However, I will say this: Taking exception to the practice on the grounds that you don't like the idea of an "under qualified" black person getting hired over a more qualified white person is completely and utterly bunk.
The assumption that any black person that got hired over a white is automatically under qualified is implicitly racist and (unless you have objective and empirical evidence stating the fact) highly illogical for a race of people that claim to have the market cornered on reason.
I don't believe in "reverse racism" in a country where the top 10% of the wealthy are white people who've inherited shit from some slave-owner great-great uncle. Or where the vast majority of the people are white.
I don't know how many people are running into under qualified blacks replacing whites. But I can assure you that there have been at least 3 times where an undereducated white person was either hired over me or placed over my head even though he knows fuck all about anything.

Affirmative action doesn't deter or solve discrimination. It bypasses proper investigation into statistical anomalies and just assumes everyone is guilty. As a result racist employers can still discriminate as long as they have 1 black community college boy in some portacabin somewhere managing stock control they can bring him up and say "we ain't raceest". The employers who chose uneducated white people over you were all following affirmative action legislation to the letter in the knowledge that the state is too corrupt and stupid to implement any actual anti-discrimination legislation.
