You're right, because differentiating between Germans, English, Icelandic, Irish, Scottish, Swedish, Norwegian, and French in America is useful as fuck because after years of mixing everyone knows their heritage.
I only know my own heritage because I'm Amish and my last name isn't common, but ask a white Smith what his lineage is and he'll probably say "white" as in the inter-mixed races of all of those nationalities because it's pragmatic and practical.
