I don't think you quite understand my argument. Here is a timeline that might help explain.

Kuwait is the US's friend.
Iraq is the US's friend.
Iraq invades Kuwait.
Iraq is no longer the US's friend.

Iraq became the US's enemy because they invaded Kuwait as you can see this happenned before Iraq ceased being the US's friend. This is because their invasion of a friend of the US caused the US to stop being friends with Iraq.
