Well in their defense.. Bigotry can make people's lives tedious and unhappy, having to tolerate insults and belittling left right and center for your entire life is not most people's idea of the pursuit of happiness. Also banning one word will not trigger the slippery slope to tyranny because people can simply use another word in it's place.
However this is about as far as most liberals go in terms of reasonning as they do not seem to realise that bigots can simply use other words instead, the ban won't change a thing. All it will do is cost taxpayer's money and fuel further bigotry, which can exist just fine without the N word.
