The effect of the ice, or actually the melting of the ice, has a larger area of effect than just the glaciers. Most of the china, america and middle east has infertile soils also, but the disturbance and therefore regeneration is more recent than the african soils. A soils age is how far it has progressed in its natural evolution, and actions that disturbe this progression (like ice movement or being covered by water, but it can be other types of action) resupply nutrients and regress the progression.
