A character can be fictional and still have a view on things. If Darth Vader wants to hate Jews, he doesn't have to become real first. All he needs is to be in a story where he displays anti-Semitic views.
It's the same story with gods. They don't have to exist to have something to say about a subject, they just need some (very real) people to put ords in their mouth. All you can do then, is choose to believe, or not, in (that particular) god.
