Food doesn't grow well in arid hilly terrain, dense disease ridden jungle areas, swamps, dense alpine forests which freeze each winter or steppes either, but that didn't stop the Persians, Incas, Germanic tribes, Vikings or Mongols from figuring out a way to live there.
