Actually, OP is right. Socrates and Plato would agree, too. Politics are based in the lowest realm of thought. It's all about appealing to the masses of people who can only see what's right in front of them. Politics is nothing more than whoring out your opinion to as many people as possible.

Doing what's right will eventually lead to a greater happiness than simply gratifying the immediate wishes of the people.
