CSPV School Violence Fact Sheets
1. Firearm-related deaths among African American youth have particularly increased. Between 1984 and 1993, gun-related deaths of young African American males tripled, with the most dramatic rise among those 13 to 18 years old.
2. Among minority youth, particularly African Americans, violence has struck with unique force in recent years. Homicide has been the leading cause of death among African American males and females between the ages of 15-24 for more than ten years.
3. Homicide now ranks third as the leading cause of death for children 10 to 14 years of age and fourth for children ages 1 to 9. Minority youth are at markedly increased risk for violent deaths. Among minority youth, especially African Americans, homicide has been the leading cause of death for both males and females between the ages of 15 and 24 for more than ten years (Hawkins, Crosby, & Hammett, 1994)
4. Young African American females are four times more likely to die by homicide than are non-African American females, whereas young African American males are eleven times more likely to die by homicide than are non-African American males (American Psychological Association, 1993). The rate of increased risk for Hispanic youth is spiraling upward as well.(Center for Disease Control, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 1997).
4. In a study of first and second graders in Washington, D.C., 45 percent said they had witnessed muggings, 31 percent said they had witnessed shootings, and 39 percent said they had seen dead bodies (Richters and Martinez, 1993).
5. A 17-year-old African American girl from Boston told a State task force that she had attended the funerals of 16 friends ages 14 to 21 who had died by violence (American Psychological Association, 1993).
6. On March 17, 2005, 15-year-old Delusa Allen was shot in the head while leaving Locke High School in Los Angeles, sending her into intensive care and eventually killing her. Four months before that several kids were injured in a riot at the same school, and last year the district had to settle a lawsuit by a student who required eye surgery after he was beaten there. In 2000, 17-year-old Deangelo Anderson was shot just across the street from Locke; he lay dead on the sidewalk for hours before the coroner came to collect his body.(Reason Foundation’s education program)
7. Some educators advocate a separate curriculum that promotes the above-described social competencies in K-6 children. Second Step has such curricula for each of several grade groups (Gregg, 1998). BrainPower teaches African American boys to interpret social cues correctly and respond appropriately (Samples & Aber, 1998). WHY IS THIS AIMED AT NIGLETS?
