What's wrong with Immigration?

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-29 1:05

Is immigration really that bad? Why? I'd rather give immigrants here a job if they will then spend the money here... it would help the economy more than companies sending the factory down to mexico.  At least if they live here, and buy things here, it will help the economy here, rather than the alternate... as I said.. our companies go searching elsewhere for cheaper labor.  What do you all think?

These arguments are nothing new.  People have been saying these kinds of arguments about every single ethnic group of non-English heritage that has immigrated to the US.  Germans, Dutch, Italians, Irish, Jews, Russians, Asians, they all have been lambasted for their immigration.

And when they were ostracized by society, they all formed their own little ethnic communities, several of which still exist today.  This is nothing new, assimilation takes a LONG time.  Both for the immigrants and the "natives" of the country.

The Irish and Asians were especially hated for the same reasons as Mexicans today, they "stole" jobs and reduced wages.  But guess what, America is a capitalist society.  You have no right to a job.  If you want a job you have to remain competitive with other workers.  Mexican immigrants don't take jobs from citizens, the citizens fail to be as competitive as the Mexicans.  This is also the reason many jobs are being outsourced.

Workers have the right to apply for work with whomever they want.  Employers have the right to hire or not hire whomever they want. It's capitalism, baby.  If you don't like capitalism, then go back to Soviet Russia.
