I never said that increased spending + cuts specifically was a good idea. I DID* say the cuts were a good idea, which they were. The economy has recently taken a massive upturn for the better, and government revenues surged enough that the deficit actually went down recently, thanks to supply-side economics and Bush's tax cuts. Sure, I'd rather we spent in a more responsible manner, but this is beside the point. The cuts themselves work.
