European Integration

Name: Schrödinger 2006-08-08 15:29

Since the end of the Second World War we have seen a considerable increase in cooperation and integration in Europe. The most obvious products of this process are the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest ;)

I ask you /p/tards. How WILL it end? How SHOULD it end?

In my opinion the result should be the European Federation, a state that represents the continent on the world stage modeled after the Federal Republic of Germany(their system is exactly what is needed) with the states giving certain souvereignity to the federation while retaining enough to still be distinct.

There should be a common auxiliary language that does not favour any ethnicity and that is not to be used as the primary language in the federation.

There should be a common military force of the EU for power projection while the territorial militaries remain under control of the state governments.

Discuss your ideas and plans for Europe.

You need only look at the United States to see what will happen to the EU.  Most people don't realize it today, but each of the states are actually supposed to be their own individual country, but around the time of the Civil War is when they began to lose power and the idea that America was a nation itself began forming and the federal has been growing since.  Though with the EU, there does seem to be a bit of a backlash lately and nationalism is on the rise.  But with the Europeans love of centralization it's inevitable that the EU will become more like the US.

With Oceania and Eurasia, we need only Eastasia for Orwell's vision to come true!

I don´t see a trend towards centralization. Unfortanetly in the english language federalism is often equated with centralism, while of course the EU has already partly decentralized many of it´s members such as France or the UK.
