The crop itself is not worth the time and effort of gathering by hand due to the efficiency of machine harvesters that now make most traditional farming methods obsolete. The South is no longer a region of vast agricultural wealth due to the natural lowering of crop prices, the obsolescence of plantations, and the lack of profitability when compared to more efficient corporate run procedures.
