Pressing Issues

What are the pressing issues facing today's moden societies, and how should they be handled?
(Try not to go with anything dealing with the War on Terror or George Bush, there's a billion other threads on that...)

The impending doom of our species is the most pressing issue. anti-chan touches on this by mentioning conflicts. The imperialist moves by the US government is sparking increase in military spending all over the world. Bush has ramped up nuclear weapons production and plans to ramp it up much more. There are thousands of nuclear missiles on hair trigger alert as you read this.

Another important issue is the environment. Each year seems to bring more and more bad news on the climate front. The most recent is the record snowfalls in Europe. Scientists have warned that northern Europe could face perpetual winter within 5-10 years. I don't think it's just media coverage. Mount Kilimanjaro is now lacking a snowy peak!

Will we wake up and realize that we're all in this together before it's too late? Unfortunately, I don't think counting on the Alpha Centaurians to show up is a good strategy.
