Dude, the Rapture actually happened, and a small percentage (just under 3%) actually was ascended into Heaven. I live in a major city, and I even saw angels separating the worthy from the wicked.
I can understand why most governments chose to cover it up. Nobody wants to know what they were left behind on Earth just because they didn't have sex with little girls. Most of the people who were there and were rejected, killed themselves on the spot. Maybe they thought they could escape being brought to Hell that way. Maybe they didn't realize that wasn't going to be any special place for them to burn in - just an harvested and abandoned Earth, left with nothing but worthless sinners. I guess that that's Hell enough.
