This would be nice: public transport, bikes, motors, scooters for in-town commuting only. Who needs cars in towns anyway? They're big, stinky, take up huge amount of space and generally unpractical.
Much less traffic, pollution, no damage to the roads, you would save up money on gas and live healthier. But try to tell it to this pricks who just HAVE to show how big are their penises.

I would think that possibly electric cars or alternatively fueled cars (that aren't as polluting as traditional petrol/gasoline) will be perfected by 2050, so I see no reason to ban those. Except for maybe if there's too much traffic congestion in some areas.

I live in the inner city of Berlin, never needed an own car. I rent a transporter once or twice a year, for 8€/h, and that's it. The public transport system is fine here. Fully integrated, with 4 to 10min bus/tram/rail/subway tacts in the center and 10 to 20min tacts in the outskirts. Still, banning cars would make a lot of problems. In two weeks is senate's election, the Green Party started promising but fell from 37% to 20% in the polls when their mayor candidate said she wants to declare a city wide speed limit of 30km/h. No fucking chance.
A plan for 2050 is as good as a plan for 5900. We can safely ignore it and pretend to have forgotten about it after a year or two. The oil dependency is a problem, this stuff has to be imported and forces us to give money and good products to Russians, Sauds and other shady people. But I think enforcing a long term oil consumption reduction is the wrong way, even biotechnically produced oil is still cheaper and more resource efficient than all the alternatives. With better bioengineered algae an oil price of under $150/barrel should be possible.

Personally I wish some people could stop shooting themselves in the foot by over-focusing on the "green" aspect of electric cars, and instead focus on stuff like energy efficiency. Especially when done right (which some car makers seem to outright avoid), we're looking at efficiency _starting_ at well over twice that available to combustion engines.
Energy efficiency FTW; not only would you waste less energy, you'd waste less money. And the energy now not wasted, translates into less fuel burned. And in turn, a green bonus on top of that. Which is what this "green" effect really is: A bonus.
