So.. What's everyone's thoughts on the situation in Egypt?

It'll blow over soon hopefully, the US and Israel won't allow Mobarak to fall.

I think it's part of a larger Arab/Muslim reform movement.  It's going on in so many countries right now it's not even funny.

in essence there are two groups the liberals who want public education and all that stuff, and the Islamic extremists who want a Muslim radical in power. the overthrow in Tunisia started this whole thing ff and yes its part of a bigger movement and its not stopping here. Its for the most part the poor (all of Cairo), lower, and middle class.And once the groups are satisfied they will back off probably

This is good news for Egypt, while it's not yet as profitable as crude oil, turmoil can still bring in a lot of money and give jobs to many Egyptians.

As long as the military remains stable, Egypt won't become Islamist (as happened in Iran in 1979).  The fact that they're on the side of the people is a bonus.

I think what's been going on is interesting, I think if the people are motivated and educated enough (and in a lot of these cases, it has a lot to do with youth who are university-educated, at home or for a bonus, abroad in a G8 country. They're the ones who are pushing this and if they all stick together and keep the attitude they've had going thus far, they'll make some pretty significant strides toward their democratic goals.

I know this totally plays into recent government's plots to stuff democracy up the middle east's assholes, but as Afghanistan & Iraq proved, people won't accept it if it's forced upon them, precisely because it was forced. It has to happen naturally, which I think is what we're seeing now. Democracy isn't the best solution, but as far as what various people from over the world are willing to accept & abide by, it's the most appealing thing manageable until the generation comes that'll decide to stop fucking around, get along, move on and accomplish greater things already. Like finding out what's beyond the universe.

There's a lot of awesome stuff out there waiting for us to discover it. That's kind of the point of being human, right, it's why we're so special? We can realize and appreciate the epic. Instead of tusslin like schoolboys we should be out there just fucking doing it. God damn. End rant.

Also... I think the internet has made this possible. Seriously. No way that many people could have coordinated themselves without it.

But the internet has played a role in this.  I'm sure the fact that a lot of social networking sites are blocked in some of these countries has somehow strengthened their unification, or something.  I don't know.
