I found South Ossetia: it was indepedent, then annexed by Russia in 1801, smartass, just another imperialist grab, following Russian Revolution split into north and south, north absorbed into Russia, south into Georgia.  I also found that Ossetia people are a kind of Iranian.

Far as I'm concerned, neither side was justified to do anything. Georgia shouldn't have picked a fight with South Ossetia and Russia shouldn't have rolled over Georgia. Georgia did their shit to troll and Russia did their shit in order to piss on the US for giving military aid to Georgia. Lulz ensues, around the Olympics.
