That assumes that living a life of truth has absolutely no value in itself. This is frightenning as it is also based on the assumption that once an individual is dead (assuming there is no god) it matters not what they did while they lived.
If you live a life believing in a god which doesn't exist, going against your own feelings in order to please and adhere to rules which are based on misunderstandings, you effectively waste your life.
It is therefore more appropriate to base your life on what is around you today, on what is tangible and accessable now. To live by rules which are unverifiable until your time of death is to sacrifice yourself without reason.
