I support the kind of anti-racist philosophy that inspired the schooling these kids have gotten. But these children and young adults didn’t live through the Apartheid days here in the American South, so they never personally had the chance to make up their own minds about racism. They don’t know why it’s bad. What they do know is that they are thoroughly bored with the story of Civil Rights—a dim passion play from the youth of their antique teachers, meaningless struggles of a dried-up messianic generation.
