If there is a God, he or she is probably more intelligent than to pick or choose any one people. The Bible calls Jews a chosen people because it was written by Jews. Get real!
(That being said, Jews ARE a very nice people, except perhaps for certain of the more Orthodox Jews who have a bad habit of sticking their noses in other Orthodox Jews' lives, where they're not always wanted. Orthodox Judaism has many divisions and rabbis with divergent opinions, and their strictness is so high that they get into fights over the stupidest things, such as carrying prayerbooks into the synagogue on Shabbat.)
The Talmud, however, is not satanic - and there is more than one Talmud out there (the Babylonian Talmud and the Jerusalem Talmud). What the Talmuds consist of is the learned opinions of various rabbis of antiquity (which most Reform Jews don't give a shit about, most Orthodox Jews probably do, and other Jews peek at once in a blue moon).
The Talmuds are based on reasoning and on Jewish law (as expressed in the sacred scriptures, including Torah) and custom, as followed some 2000 years ago. Because of that, the Talmuds are archaic, but it nonetheless has a strong pull on Jewish traditions and customs even today.
