It's just how life evolved. Oxygen's high reactivity is what allows respiration to be so efficient. And there are a lot of things pretty much everywhere that do harm to all the lifeforms we know of, like cosmic radiation. Living beings are so insanely complex that pretty much any upset in something can have disastrous consequences.
