Powerful Earthquake Strikes Iran

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A strong earthquake hit southeast Iran on Tuesday, killing almost 400 people, injuring hundreds and destroying some villages, a local official told Reuters.

The early morning quake, which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, also injured more than 1,000 people and was centered on the town of Zarand in Kerman province, about 440 miles southeast of Tehran.

The tremor came just over a year after a devastating earthquake in Bam, about 160 miles southeast of Zarand, in which some 31,000 people were killed in December, 2003.
