Is it bad that I Self-Advertise? I've been trying to establish myself as a serious musician, but it seems that my actions are in vain, outside of my main Facebook page.

there's nothing wrong with self-advertising as long as you're not obnoxious about it

Marketing is a very important part of music. If no one does it for you, you haven't really got a choice but to do it yourself.
It's hard for an artist to maintain two different attitudes. On the one hand the "I don't care about $, I just want to make art/music" and on the other hand "I want cash". But it's not selling out to market yourself as long as you maintain artistic integrity and don't change your own art.
Well depends on what you are as an artist. For example if you were a hip hop artist you might want to graffiti you name and details everywhere (in an artistic manner of course).
Go to some cafe to sign up as their singer and sing your way there. If people stared at you while you sing, you had better chance in becoming an musician, otherwise if people ignored you, good luck then.
Anyway I am sure you know about what is America Idoi and America got talent, right. That would be the most effective or destruction path for your career if you know what I mean !

Self-promotion isn't wrong at all, you have to get your name out somehow
I think that how you market yourself depends on what kind of music you're making. You should definitely not sell yourself out, but at the end of the day you are crafting and selling a product. Make it the best product you possibly can, and if you're good, someone will be more than willing to pay for it. On the other hand, if you don't ask for any money, people will probably view you differently, and maybe not for the better.
I don't think you should advertise yourself. Have a bandcamp account, do every gig you can get. If you're good, your name will get out there eventually.
