Why is music today so sad?

They played the 80s nite on the radio last night and the music from back then sounds so upbeat..  why can't we have some like that today?

The biz is pushing thuggy rap, R&Bpop, and whiny emo currently.  The 80s had lots of downbeat stuff then too, but wouldn't fit the hit format.  So I figure there's some upbeat stuff like that now too.  I hardly pay attention to how old songs are anymore -- have you heard Dandy Worhols lately for instance, or Mika?  I don't know how recent their most recent stuff is though.
