Thinking about trying violins

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-04 3:03

So I am 19, never really played any kind of instrument or learned music theory but I have been thinking about trying to learn to play the violin.
Advice, suggestions, naysaying are all welcome

what you do is, practice 10,000 hours, and you'll be pretty good

Violin is fucking hard to master, or even learn to play decently so your audience can listen to you.
Beginner violist = GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE AND GO PRACTICE TO THE MOUNTAINS ALONE IN A COTTAGE.

Master violist = Allow me to put this hundred-million check into your pocket while I let you titfuck me.

While the violin is going to take several years and lots of practice to get "good" at, it is probably always worth the time.

Try it out for a few months, at least. Don't get discouraged if you feel that you're moving very slowly or are not making the process you want to be.

My highest suggestion, though, would be to find a good teacher. As much as you might like to try, it'd be nigh impossible to ever develop good technique on the violin by yourself.

I've been playing for 6, 7 years now?

It is HARD. Most important thing is definitely a great teacher.

Violin is very difficult. There are a lot of easier instruments out there...

Having said that, my electric violin kicks ass.

Shit, viola is harder than violin. Violin rep is harder but viola is a bitch to play physically.

If you want to start learning violin at this age, get ready to sound like shit. You're going to have no bow control for at least the next 5 years. Your intonation will suck balls as well. No sense of time. And you're not going to have any coordination.

Get a good teacher, one that teaches lots of adults and high schoolers but also knows how to start 4-year-olds on the violin. Also, DO NOT BUY A SHITTY $40 VIOLIN-SHAPED OBJECT OFF OF AMAZON OR SOME SHIT. They're are only good for smashing, which you might want to do to your violin several times...

If you want to learn a stringed instrument that's easier to play, I'd go for a gamba, but they're not really that popular so finding a teacher much less acquiring a gamba would be difficult.
