Yes, Bright Eyes consists of many musical genres, but the main three are indie rock, emo, and indie folk. It's Conor's song crafting that really ties the knot for the emo genre.

The thing is, people think that the cliche radio-bands like the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and the All-American Rejects are real emo music. While they are considered emo bands they are radio-friendly bands who don't put as much soul and compassion into they're songwriting as artists like Conor Oberst does. Bright Eyes is true, real, and honest emo; pretty much the real definition for the genre. If you guys went back in time and did you're history on emo, then yu would see why Bright Eyes is also and emo band or has emo hinted and shined in all it's music. Or just most of it.

well if you wanna get really elitest about emo music, then Bright Eyes is far from it. its just talented music...i see no PUNK in it - which is pretty much required for tr00 emo.

Not real sure how one could think Bright Eyes is considered "emo" -- especially with the trend being so large and sounding NOTHING like Bright Eyes. Though, some of his music is a "downer" to some.

Does it sound like La Quiete when La Quiete was good?

I would have said Bright Eyes was an emo band right up until I really got to know the kind of music that people who like emo music like. Bright Eyes is way too folk for the emo kids. So, despite the lyrical content, I have to say Bright Eyes is not emo.

Bright eyes could only even begin to be considered Emo when you look at Obersts' earlier compilations such as Perfect Sonnet. Even then, the lyrics are much too ingenious for an emo label... however, his singing in particular eras of his career could be parallel to an emo artists as he is trying to channel his raw emotion to his listeners.

Bright Eyes such as I'm Wide Awake and It's Morning, or Cassadage, or even Noise Floor is hard to call 'emo'... as emo is normally equated with shit music, and Obersts lyrics and musical quailty are no where near shit.

Songs such as Bowl of Oranges, First Day of My Life, and You Are The Roots that Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place could never contend as emo. NEVER.
