If not, what else would it be? Lyrics sound emo but band members are older grown men.

Lol.
Yep, a genre-defining band now onto their seventh album with a history of experimentation and non-commercial sounds, who nevertheless sell millions of albums. Yep, that's 'just an ok band'.
I hate this generalization of the word "emo." All of a sudden everything that has a hint of emotions is tagged or mistaken as "emo" in the context by which it is more popularly known. >_< Honestly, can't music express feelings anymore?
And about Radiohead. Their music is experimental; dark but not goth; gloomy but not necessarily sad; strange but not weird. LOL, I'd just say that they're alternative rock.

Experimental? No. You have no idea what experimental music is if you think radiohead is experimental. Furthermore, since when do album sales equate how good an artist is?

Radiohead is experimental, they have produced pretty innovative sounds and have diverse songs. Sure they aren't Mars Volta or Animal Collective, and haven't broken new ground like a Miles Davis or anything, but they try new shit

Whether or not you like them, The Mars Volta doesn't blow. I don't even like their music, but they are good musicians in that they have a near mastery of their instruments. Listen to that fucking drummer...

radiohead sux choads.
get some porcupine tree into you, with a side order of illicit drugs, and the you will see music
really guys? radiohead is beyond amazing
calling them emo and putting them in the same category as shit like red jumpsuit fuckeratus is insane
even if you dont like the music radiohead puts out no one can deny that they are some of the most if not the most talented ppl out there today
they are alternative simply bc they dont really fall into a simple genre
they are their own and thats whats best about them
they stay away from all the media attention and all the other bs because the only thing they are interested in is the music
they all went graduated from oxford yet chose to be artists bc they truly love what they do
they have a passion and thats what matters
emo shit is ppl that want others to know how much their lives suck and want ppl to feel sorry for them
radiohead has a passion and a message
they are not fucking emo you idiots

Radiohead are awesome, albeit a bit overrated, and every artsy fag I know loves them.
They don't fit nicely in one category, so why try and lump them into one?

This is a paradox, but yeah, I can deny that pretty hardcore. Radiohead's pretty mediocre all things considered, and it's made worse by Thom Yorke's complete inability to sing.

Alright kids, listen up because I'm only explaining this once. Lyrics or image does not define a band as emo. Emo isn't just a shitty umbrella term you faggots can use to label anything you don't like.
"Emo" comes from the term "emotional hardcore." Emotional hardcore is an extension of "hardcore punk." Back when you were just a twinkle in your dad's eye, there was a hardcore band called Minor Threat. Ian MacKaye, the singer/leader of the group, went on to later participate in other bands such as Embrace, Rites of Spring, and Fugazi.
These bands marked a change in style from the Minor Threat style hardcore fans were used to to a slightly more introspective and much more emotional/angry sound. Vocals were becoming more distinctively raw and intense. The tempo of the music itself also began to slow a bit from the fast paced hardcore sound. Bands would not only focus on introspective topics, but also political and social issues as well. The straight edge culture was a big factor and influence in the early stages of the early emo scene.
Like any music movement, it wasn't long before the genre began to move in many different directions. Emo ranged from very loud, heavy, and dissonant to soft, melodic, and even pop friendly. Today, bands like My Chemical Romance and Dashboard Confessional are considered popular emo bands. This could be considered the equivalent of Sum 41 and Blink 182 being marketed as punk.
So, in a nutshell, this is the short summary of emo. Now that you have some basic understanding of what the term emo actually means, please refrain from liberally applying it to every group that wears black mascara and pink ties. That's just not how it works.

I knew exactly what emo is today. I did not know that Fugazi in any way had something to do with its development. I was into Minor Threat and Fugazi in '90, but I disappeared from life for about 8 years (heroin). Thanks for the simple tutorial. I wondered what the fuck started it.

There's a great article from years ago in a magazine from Athens, Georgia about stopping the emo menace. I guess we failed to stop it. Chunklet issue #15, The 100 Biggest Assholes in Rock is on the cover
