So i'm learning how to play electric guitar, but i'm getting bored. I need distortion in my practace songs to keep myself interested. What's the cheapest way to get distortion into my setup? My amp is a POS that doesn't have much more then bass/treble controls.

a cheap pedal, perhaps? Or you can do it the hendrix way and blow it out.
But he was amazing and knew what he was doing, so I can't recommend it...

Cheap pedal is probably the best option, I've seen decent brands run about 35-60 in canuck funds. I'll have a name or two later if you need more info.

What about playing it through a bass amp? Kyuss did that at some of their shows.

in cubase, you can set a track to record, turn on the monitor, and hear the signal post any track effects and EQs. i'm pretty sure it's not the only software app that can do that, either. if you can get your comp to do that, bam. just plug your guitar in the line in and route your headphone out to the amp.
there's a bit of a learning curve, though, and you'll have some latency. this is still the cheapest way, though.

Something that became a bit of a trademark for their guitar player. What other artists of their time picked up on that, I wonder? It definitely give's the guitar licks a heavier sound

if you have a seperate stereo, plug the guitar into that, crank it up to stupid volume and then plug the headphone into your amp, it should distort plenty.
