Is Rock the same as Easy Listening?

A lot of Easy Listening stations play something that uses guitars, drums, bass, and the keyboard, but has a really mellow laid back tone and a singer who sounds like he just woke up.  Since the 90's, I've been hearing "rock" music that is just as laid back and snore inducing.  I thought rock was supposed to be fast, hard, loud.  Instead anyone can grab a microphone and speak as softly and quietly as they want and still get play on a rock station.
