Let's say it's 1990 and you, a man in your early 20s, watch "Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers" every day in the afternoon. You love that show even though it's for kids...though it's really because you think that mouse Gadget is totally sexy. You keep that fact a secret, though. It's not like you would ever think of wearing a T-Shirt with Gadget on it to work. You hide it even from the guys you play D&D with every Wednesday night. Those guys are cool, you can talk about comic books and poo poo all night with them, but you know that even they would think it's weird if you admit to finding the cartoon mouse sexy. Like one time, Kevin admitted he thought Jubilee from the X-Men cartoon show was hot, and Gary was like "dude, she's 14." But you keep the secret in your heart, thinking about Gadget during dull moments at work and when you're lying in bed at night.
One Sunday afternoon, a flood of inspiration hits and you spend five hours writing a story where Gadget gets kidnapped by Fat Cat and sexually abused by his minions. When Chip, Dale and Monty rescue her, she's so grateful she fucks the three of them together. Oh man, this poo poo is great! You've never seen or read anything like this...up to now all you've had access to is the Playboy magazines you buy at the 7-11, and that book of erotic comics that Kevin lent you. This is so much better because now it's Gadget living out all your deepest fantasies, the ones you never even admit to having.
So what are your options at this point? Well, we already discussed how you don't want to share your secret with your friends. Like, you could show your story to Kevin but he'd probably get freaked out, and you already feel like a social outcast so much of the time you don't want to make it worse. You see guys handing out poorly-Xeroxed socialist newsletters on the street corners sometimes, but you couldn't possibly share what you've written with strangers - you're sure no one else out there feels the same way about Gadget. And anyway, you don't want to be labeled as some kind of deviant sex pervert. So you stick your story in your desk and never tell anyone about it. You go back and read it sometimes, but as time goes on the feelings get less intense as you move up in your job, work up the courage to talk to the cute girl who works at the Safeway, and basically grow up a little. You never actually stop feeling this way about Gadget, but you're interested in so many other things too. You understand that feelings about a cartoon character don't have to define who you are.
And then 20 years later you look at Bronies and feel so loving glad you didn't have the ability to post that story on the internet.
