Such as why do things get faster when they fall?  Why can't things just stay the same speed they were falling when they started falling.

Gravity is sensorial.  The farther you fall, the closer you get to the object exhibiting gravitational force, thus the more eager that said object is to see you.  Hence it hurries you along all the MOAR.
