Black and white are colours.  Remember that what we call colours is the perceived result of brain processing, and we perceive black and white as distinct and nameable colours.  When people say they are not colours, what they should say is that they mean that the stimuli that give rise to the perceived colours is special in some way.  That is, black is the perceptual result of relative lack of stimuli from a widespread range of visible wavelengths of light, and white is perceptual result of relative abundance of stimuli from a widespread range of visible wavelengths of light.  Remeber, colours are perceptions resulting from the interaction of external stimuli and our visual sytem, and are not the external stimuli themselves.  Colours are perceptual phenomena.
