When the circles are apart, it looks like breasts. When they overlap, it looks too much like ass cheeks and a bulbous taint, especially if cross-hatching is used to emphasize the overlap.

Modern diagrammists avoid this by using differently-sized circles joined at odd angles. It is a solved problem.
