my grade 9 class is 25% grade 9's (straight out of grade 8) and the rest of them are 18-20 years old. Some of them have taken this class 4 times!
a lot of these kids/young adults don't give a fuck about anything as long as they can keep their iPods plugged into their heads 24/7. School is the last thing on their mind and deadlines are the least of their responsibilities when they've already had/fathered 2 kids and been to jail/on probation a few times.
One of my students was suspended for 15 days because she stole a teacher's car and took it for a few days. The police found it in her driveway! She was surprised that she was punished because, "I needed a car to go shopping(shoplifting)!" What's even sadder is that her parents didn't seem to care that their 17 year old daughter somehow managed to acquire a car!
