poking in the ground, WTF a bee

Name: Anonymous 2010-08-13 5:12

I must say, I've discovered a whole world of insect life over past couple of summers by poking around a muddy gravel driveway, lawn, and wooded area.  Many a time I would lift a stone and find a tiny centipede beneath.  What are you doing there, centipede?  I never knew we had centipedes in this area.

In the last couple of days in my digging out of unwanted plant roots, I would unearth a bumblebee.  What were you doing in there, bee?  I think it may have been sleeping in there.  A day or two later, I think I woke up the same bee in a nearby spot.  I have to be careful around the dirt that I have been loosening up, as bees are crawling into it.

Bumblebees have nests underground.
They don't have them on trees like honey bees do.
