Naruto: Kawarimi jutsu

I don't understand this jutsu. For example, a ninja that is  attacked can use this kawarimi jutsu and appear as a log and then appear from somewhere else. What happens to the body during this jutsu? Does it teleport the ninja somewhere else?

the ninja that utilises this jutsu switches his or her body with another object.
If that object is damaged, (e.g. torn, destroyed) what happens to the ninja?

If that object is placed in a small container that would not be able to normally hold a human body, what would happen to the ninja?
