My first grade student teacher (basically, a teacher intern that had graduated from college and was getting first hand experience in dealing with the kids) told us there were no buffalo. They were extinct. I stared at her in shock. My mother was the type to do a lot of field trips outside of school. We had just driven down to a farm so I could learn about it, that past weekend. That farm happened to raise buffalo. I raised my hand as high as I could. She called on me. "Ms. Dumbbitch, but there are buffalo, I saw them this weekend," I said. She told me I was wrong. And a liar. I hadn't seen buffalo. They were "very furry cows". No, I said, they were buffalo. And then I proceeded to go into my 7 year old version's indepth description of buffalo ('They had big shoulders and lots of fur around their heads and they were really dark brown', if I remember correctly).
She told me to shut up. That I was a disrespectful child. I didn't know what I was talking about and when the actual teacher got back, I was going to be sent to the office for being wrong. Mrs. Smartteacher walked back in a couple of minutes later, while I'm still arguing with Ms. Dumbbitch. Mrs. Smartteacher asked what the problem was. Ms. Dumbbitch told her. Mrs. Smartteacher blinked at her, frowned and said "She's right. Buffalo are not extinct." To which I promptly shouted, pointing at Ms. Dumbbitch "I told you so!"
Ms. Dumbbitch left a couple of months later. There were many other mistakes like this. This one just stands out because every time I pick up a pack of ground buffalo from the grocery store, I chuckle inwardly.
