There's a difference between some bitch on MTV crying cause she didn't get the birthday party she wanted versus someone in an existential dilemma.
Some of the happiest people I ever met were poor Brazilians with almost nothing, and the cultures that come from colder climes have a higher amount of depression and negativity. You are the one who is tying happiness to material possessions. Poor people have a more well defined goal and so it is easier for them to focus on that and forget about suffering whereas people with more will tend towards an existential malaise due to lack of purpose and focus in life.
