When a society frowns upon intellectual pursuits, mocks science, and does not value reason, a person dare not appear too bright.  The current USA is an extreme case of this phenomenon.  To avoid scorn, one must avoid showing curiousity and interest in non-trivial matters and hide competence in complicated skills.  To gain favour, one must earn tard cred.
