Matrix

I don't understand why all the people who 'wake up' from The Matrix are allowed to live. Surely if they didn't want humans to live they would just kill them as soon as they come out of the pod and there would be no Zion and no rebels and no need to send so many machines to destroy Zion in the first place.

Keep in mind that they hack people out of those pods and likely fool the machinery into thinking that the people have died and thus they should just be disposed of.
