The can-can dance was developed in France in the 1800s, imitative of a high-kicking dance style of a popular entertainer. It later became the stage performance dance known today. The principal purpose of the dance in its stage form is to become aware of the vaginal part of the dancers' bodies as they kick high, lifting their skirts. The usually hidden legs are able to be seen, though perhaps clothed with underthings, all the way up to the torso (and vagina and ass).
