The book is epic, and the setting so alien that it's difficult to translate, so the films are generally only capable of being enjoyed in a nostalgic sort of way by people who have read the book. It was written in the early 1960's, and is an allegory for the middle east. The spice is, of course, oil. The Fremen are Arabs, etc. Even without the clear connection to oil that remains relevant to this day, it is a great work of fiction.

The movie was fascinating. I had to take notes to keep track of who the hell everyone was, though. Never read the book.

I like how he originally had to get it published by Chilton, the guys that make all those auto books. Now those first editions go for a pretty hefty price.
