Bob Dole back in 1996 running against Clinton for his second term (I know, lol @ Bob Dole) promised to abolish the Department of Education, citing that government should in no way be involved in the education of children or adults returning to school. Much of the Republican party was behind him in this.

No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 that effectively keeps dumb students progressing; dragging down good students who actually care for their education. The Republican party was behind him (and many Democrats too!) all the way
