This is something that I have observed for a while. I know that they are rich, but Americans are rich too. Is it because of the fact that they have an ethnically and linguistically homogeneous population in combination with one of the highest life expectancies in the world?

The Japanese are not happy, but their culture is one of facades and keeping up a public image.
So they never express their sadness outright, they repress it and smile, at most killing themselves quietly. There is some disease Japanese business men get where they can't stop smiling even though they're unhappy. Look into it you asshole!

American southerners are like that too. They're all "y'all" and "hun" and "pee-can pie," but they can just as quickly stab you in the back when you're not looking! Or, so I've heard.

Japanese people are never happy. The smiles are pained ones. THEY ALL WANT TO DIE.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in all age-groups below 65 in Japan. LOL.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Most educators and professionals do not consider it appropriate to use tertiary sources such as encyclopedias as a sole source for any information — citing an encyclopedia as an important reference in footnotes or bibliographies may result in censure or a failing grade. Wikipedia articles should be used for background information, as a reference for correct terminology and search terms, and as a starting point for further research.
Japan has its share of poor people and crime, they are just good at hiding it from the international community. And all those fat wapanese tourists only visit clean areas.

Yeah, people who are morons generally are. Which, unfortunately makes up the majority of the population of the Internet. Same goes for people who make up silly arbitrary guidelines.
