i used to know my girlfriend's name, but i'm really really bad with names and have long since forgotten it. quite frankly, it's never really been necessary in conversation, and i don't have a habit of introducing her to others.
our relationship is far enough along now that just coming out and asking "oh, by the way, what is your name anyway?" is all sorts of awkward, but it doesn't change the fact that i can't remember her name for the life of me. all i can remember is the number of syllables, and the fact that it rhymes with her mother's name which i can remember quite easily. i have, luckily, not blurted out the wrong name during any of our many in-depth conversations, but i worry that such a slip may occur in the future and it will be embarrassing.
is there any established social etiquette for dealing with this sort of issue? ideally something that has not come from a bad seinfeld episode. it hasn't been a problem up to now, but i fear that it'll just get more and more difficult the longer we're together, so i would like to figure it out as soon as possible.
