hi
i am no noob to overclocking, but have only recently started to mess with the dark side
after a brief foray with an e2160 (currently doing a sedate 2.4ghz at 1.2vcore in a Gigabyte 945-GCM S2L for my wife's use), i am looking at going bigger
i already have a Gigabyte 965P-DS3P rev 3.3 and a pair of ocz platinum pc6400 that i know can do a stable 1000 odd in that board, and am contemplating a 45nm process core
although "not officially supported", the rev 3.3 allegedly handles a swag of processors at that speed, and it's the wolfdales that have my eye
the questions i'd like answered are :
apart from e-peen, what's the benefit of quad core (essentially dual dual cores) over a c2d ? i don't do much encoding, and i can do other shit while that happens in the background really
asynchronous ram timing means essentially the pc6400's aren't at a great disadvantage ? i can always grab some uber-ram once i'm addicted, and i can use the dividers to get 1000+ at 4-4-4-15 out of them anyway (i could when i tried anyway, on the e2160)
i presume the xeon wolfdales are just better binned 8series chips; is that so ? from experience with opteron versus san diego's in amd, you are sure of good silicon, although both my sandies rocked too
and as a final ask - who stole the ram latencies adjust on my gigabyte bios ? - for fuck's sake even the 945-gcm had some setting switches
do i need to do ctrl+f1 to find them on the 3.3 as well ?
thx for any cleverness
